Now that the weather is colder, we want to share some tips and tricks about staying warm in your home.

Did you know that many of our buildings have heating management systems? The system tells your thermostat how much power to send to your baseboards based on:

  • The size of the room
  • Outdoor temperature
  • The temperature you set on your thermostat

All you have to do is set your thermostats to the desired temperature and let the system do the work.

Why use an automated system?

Heating management systems conserve energy, saving money on utilities. It also helps to prolong the life of heating and ventilation systems by distributing power more evenly.

Whether or not your building has an automated system, here are some tips to stay warm this winter:

  • Remember, window air conditioners should have been removed by October

15, and you must ensure the windows are properly re-installed for the winter.

  • When cold outside, only open windows or patio doors for a few minutes, or just a small amount.
  • Make sure furniture or curtains aren’t blocking baseboard heaters. Leaving about two inches of space around heaters helps prevent any fire hazards.
  • Do not use external electric or ceramic heating equipment – Extra heating equipment can trick the thermostat into thinking the room is hot enough and cause the baseboard heaters to turn off. Letting the baseboards do the work will help keep things cozy!

Other tips:

  • The air in your apartment can get dry during the heating season. It may help to lower the temperature on your thermostat overnight.
  • Use a humidifier during the winter.
  • Dust and debris can get into your baseboard heaters. It is recommended that you vacuum, dust or use a damp cloth to clean outside and inside your heaters before the cold season sets in.
