STUDENT EMPLOYEES CELEBRATED AT OCHC

OCHC and MP Chandra Arya celebrated student employees working at the corporation as part of the Canada Summer Jobs Program

OTTAWA August 15, 2018  – This morning, Stéphane Giguère, Ottawa Community Housing Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, and Chandra Arya, Member of Parliament for Nepean, presented certificates to OCHC’s student employees taking part in this government’s Canada Summer Jobs Program.

Once again this year, Ottawa Community Housing is thrilled to be able to provide students with the opportunity to gain real-life workplace experience by being hired at OCHC through the Canada Summer Jobs Program,” said Giguère. “Students are employed in a variety of roles, in many departments across the corporation, and through the promotion of learning and education in the workplace, students have the opportunity to be better prepared for their future careers.

This placement for students is made possible with the financial support from the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Jobs Program.  The Program provides wage subsidies for not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses. This year, OCHC received a total of $127,680 in funding and was able to hire over 50 students.

Canada’s youth aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow, they’re the leaders of today. With the Canada Summer Jobs Program youth are able to gain valuable work experience, enabling them to grow in their career paths early on. We’ve seen the youth unemployment rate drop ‎2.3 per cent over the past two years and we know that these kinds of programs make a real difference in helping youth kick-start their‎ careers.

During his visit to OCHC, Arya met with the 18 students who work or live in his constituency and presented them with certificates for their participation in the program. Arya talked about the positive impact of working for OCHC and thanked the students, as well as OCHC employees for their time and commitment in delivering services to 32,000 tenants. CEO Stéphane Giguère was also presented with a certificate in recognition of OCHC’s participation in the program and in employing students who are learning and helping build stronger communities.
