Ottawa Community Housing Launches Fire Prevention Week
Share this story
On Monday, September 23, 2019, Ottawa Community Housing (OCHC) will kick off its annual Fire Prevention Week with tenants, special guests, fire safety activities sponsored by Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) and a BBQ. The launch event will be held in the Overbrook community, with the theme “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”.
This year, OCHC launches its own Fire Prevention awareness campaign in partnership with OFS 2 weeks prior to the official nationwide Fire Prevention Week. OCHC’s Fire Prevention Week features fire safety information sessions, door-to-door, and fire education information. Guests to the launch event will get a chance to have a picture taken with Sparky the Fire Safety Dog.
OCHC is committed to keeping tenants safe and recognize that it is a dual responsibility of OCHC and the tenants to ensure fire safety.
Our research shows that most fires in our communities are caused by unsafe cooking practices and start in the kitchen. Through the efforts of OCH staff working in partnership with OFS and tenants, we have seen a significant decline in kitchen fires in our communities over the past year.
