Meet Linda, a special resident of 140 Den Haag.

Linda has lived within Ottawa Community Housing for almost 10 years, moving to Ottawa in 2001 from Montreal.  Before retiring, she worked in palliative care at May Court Hospice for nearly a decade, a role that shaped her caring and compassionate approach to life.

Linda thought, “Why not turn this space (the lounge) into a hub for community-based events?” With the support of her fellow tenants and the OCH Community Development team, Linda began organizing coffee socials and art classes, particularly aimed at seniors and disabled tenants. Her goal was simple – to bring people together, share experiences, and foster a sense of belonging.

When the pandemic brought new challenges, Linda’s commitment never wavered. She quickly adapted, turning the crisis into an opportunity to introduce art classes to help tenants express themselves creatively. With support from her neighbours and OCH, these classes became more than just an activity – they provided comfort and connection during isolating times.

Linda didn’t stop there. She recently started a food pantry program with donations from a fellow tenant at 312 Cumberland, helping those in need with the building. She hopes to grow the pantry project to support the surrounding Carsons’ community, ensuring no one goes hungry. With her passion for service and drive to make a difference, she is working tirelessly to secure funding for a proper food pantry in the building, ensuring that it will continue to be there for anyone who needs it.

Linda’s favorite part of her work is her camaraderie with those around her.

“Everyone gets along well and is supportive. It motivates me to keep going.”

Her relationships with her neighbors are built on teamwork and mutual respect, creating an environment where everyone is eager to lend a hand and learn from one another.

Of course, no volunteer’s journey is without its challenges. Linda’s main hurdle is being responsible for maintaining the lounge space after events. However, Linda remains dedicated to creating a comfortable and welcoming place for all.  Her efforts have made a real difference, strengthening the sense of community at 140 Den Haag.
